Why I’ve Moved Mostly Away from Photoshop and Now Use ChatGPT for Graphic Design

For many years, Photoshop was one of the obvious tools to reach for when creating graphics for websites, advertising and marketing. But the way I work has changed dramatically with the arrival of generative AI.

I’ve now moved mostly away from Photoshop and do the majority of my graphical work using ChatGPT.

From Manual Design to AI-Assisted Design

Traditional graphic design can involve a lot of manual work: finding suitable imagery, cutting objects out, adjusting backgrounds, creating compositions, experimenting with typography and repeatedly making small changes until everything looks right.

AI has changed that workflow.

With ChatGPT, I can describe the graphic I have in mind and develop the idea through natural-language instructions. Instead of starting with a blank canvas and manually constructing every element, I can start with the concept.

I can then refine it: change the wording, alter the composition, replace an element, try a different visual direction or create something completely new.

That makes graphic creation feel much more conversational.

Photoshop Still Has Its Place

I haven’t necessarily abandoned Photoshop completely. Traditional image-editing software can still be valuable when precise manual control is required.

The difference is that it is no longer automatically my starting point.

For a lot of marketing graphics, blog imagery and creative concepts, AI can now get me from an idea to a finished visual much more quickly. Photoshop becomes a specialist tool rather than the centre of the entire workflow.

Creativity Becomes More About the Idea

One of the most interesting changes is where the work happens.

Previously, a large part of graphic design was about knowing how to operate the software. You needed to know which tools to select and how to physically create the effect you wanted.

With AI-assisted design, more emphasis is placed on the idea, art direction and instructions.

You still need judgement. AI doesn’t automatically know what will make a good advertisement or represent a business effectively. You have to decide what you want to communicate, what looks right and whether the finished result supports the brand.

The tool has changed, but creative decision-making remains important.

A Faster Workflow for Stovin Advertising

For Stovin Advertising, this gives me a much faster way of developing graphics alongside websites, SEO campaigns, advertising and blog content.

An idea for a marketing campaign can become written content and supporting artwork within the same creative workflow.

That speed makes experimentation much easier. Instead of investing significant time in every individual concept, I can explore different ideas and concentrate my effort on the strongest ones.

AI Is Changing Graphic Design

I believe we’re seeing a fundamental change in how digital graphics are produced.

Photoshop isn’t suddenly useless, and skilled graphic designers aren’t suddenly irrelevant. But AI is becoming another major creative tool, and for my own work it has already become the tool I use most.

I’ve moved mostly away from Photoshop.

Today, much of my graphical work starts with an idea, a conversation and ChatGPT.
