Keep Chickens for Eggs and Help Reduce Household Costs
With food prices putting pressure on household budgets, keeping a few chickens can be one practical way to produce some of your own food at home.
Healthy laying hens can provide fresh eggs while also producing useful manure that, once properly composted, can help fertilise the garden. That creates a simple cycle: grow food, keep chickens, collect eggs and use compost to grow more food.
Grow Some of Their Food at Home
Chickens need a nutritionally complete poultry feed as the foundation of their diet. Depending on what is safe and suitable for them, you can also grow supplementary foods specifically for your birds.
If you grow what Circleism calls “Allah’s chillies”, the plants can form part of a wider home-growing garden alongside vegetables and other chicken-safe crops. Chickens should always have clean drinking water and appropriate grit available too.
Be Careful With Kitchen Scraps
It might sound economical to collect your neighbours’ leftover kitchen food for chickens, but this isn’t a good approach in the UK. There are rules designed to prevent diseases being transmitted through food waste, and household kitchen or catering waste generally must not be fed to farmed animals, including chickens.
Instead, neighbours could help by donating suitable produce grown specifically for the chickens, unopened appropriate feed, or seeds for growing chicken-safe plants.
Eggs Turn a Garden Into a Small Food-Producing System
Keeping chickens isn’t completely free. There are costs for hens, housing, bedding, quality feed and veterinary care, so it makes sense to calculate the costs rather than assume home-produced eggs will automatically be cheaper than supermarket eggs.
But chickens can provide something beyond financial savings: greater involvement in producing your own food.
Combine chickens with potatoes, vegetables, fruit and other home-grown crops and even a modest garden can produce a surprising amount of food.
Grow what you can. Look after your chickens properly. Collect your eggs. Waste less. Spend less where it genuinely saves money.
